Overview
GuitarChordIdentifier.com is operated by Daniel Murphy. This Privacy Policy explains what information this site collects, how it is used, and what rights you have in relation to it.
GuitarChordIdentifier.com does not sell personal data. It does not operate advertising networks. It does not use behavioural tracking cookies. Both chord identification modes — fret input and microphone — process all user input entirely within your browser and transmit nothing to any server. This policy documents that commitment in full.
If you have questions about any part of this policy, contact Daniel Murphy at contact@guitarchordidentifier.com. Privacy and data requests receive a response within 7 business days.
Tool Data Handling
Fret input mode When you select fret and string positions in the fret input mode, the tool performs all calculations locally in your browser using JavaScript. Your fret selections are not transmitted to any server, not stored in any persistent browser storage, and cleared when you reload or close the page. No audio is captured in this mode.
Microphone mode The microphone chord identification mode captures live guitar audio to detect chord notes. The following statements apply without exception:
- Guitar audio is captured locally within your browser using the Web Audio API
- Audio is processed in an in-memory buffer for the duration of the active detection session only
- Audio is never recorded to any file or storage medium
- Audio is never transmitted to GuitarChordIdentifier.com’s server or any third-party server
- Audio is never shared with analytics services, advertising networks, or any external party
- Audio is never stored in cookies, localStorage, sessionStorage, IndexedDB, or any persistent browser storage
- The microphone stream is closed and all in-memory audio data is released when the session ends or the tab is closed
Your guitar audio is not personal data held by this site. It never reaches this site’s server. For the full technical pipeline explanation, see the Data Security page.
Automatically Collected Information
When you visit any page on GuitarChordIdentifier.com, the web server automatically logs standard HTTP request data. This may include:
- Your IP address (used for server-side security and rate limiting; not used for tracking)
- Browser type and version
- Operating system
- The page URL requested
- The HTTP referrer (the page you visited before this one, if any)
- The date and time of the request
This data is retained in server logs for up to 30 days for security and diagnostic purposes and is then deleted. It is not combined with any other data to identify you individually. It is not shared with third parties except where required by law.
Analytics
GuitarChordIdentifier.com may use basic anonymous analytics to understand aggregate site usage — page views, browser distribution, and approximate geographic region. Any analytics tool used on this site collects only anonymised, aggregate data. It does not track individual users across sessions, does not use behavioural profiling, and does not have access to fret input selections, guitar audio, or the Web Audio API pipeline.
No advertising analytics, no user-level profiling, and no cross-site tracking are in use on this site.
Note for future update: When Google Analytics or Google AdSense is added to this site, update this section to add the Google Analytics cookie table (_ga, _gid, _gat with lifespans) and the Google AdSense / DoubleClick cookie disclosure, along with all four advertising opt-out links.
Advertising
GuitarChordIdentifier.com does not currently run advertising of any kind. There are no advertising cookies on this site. There are no DoubleClick cookies. There are no third-party advertising scripts loaded on any page.
If advertising services are added to this site in the future, this Privacy Policy will be updated before those services go live, and a dedicated advertising section — including full disclosure of any advertising cookies, opt-out mechanisms, and GDPR/CCPA implications — will be added at that time.
Cookies
This site uses only essential functional cookies necessary for basic site operation — for example, WordPress session cookies that maintain site stability and security. No tracking cookies, no advertising cookies, and no third-party profiling cookies are set by this site.
Chord identification results, fret input selections, and guitar audio are not stored in cookies or any persistent browser storage. For a full breakdown of the cookies used on this site and how to manage them, see the Cookie Policy.

If you contact Daniel Murphy via the contact form or by email at contact@guitarchordidentifier.com, the following data is collected:
- Your name (if provided)

- The content of your message
This data is used solely to respond to your enquiry. It is not added to any mailing list, not shared with third parties, and not used for any purpose beyond handling your specific request. Contact data is retained for up to 12 months after the last correspondence and then deleted.
Third-Party Links
GuitarChordIdentifier.com may contain links to external websites — including guitar theory resources, music education materials, and browser documentation. This Privacy Policy applies only to GuitarChordIdentifier.com. Daniel Murphy is not responsible for the privacy practices of any third-party site. You are encouraged to review the privacy policy of any external site you visit.
Data Security
All pages on GuitarChordIdentifier.com are served over HTTPS. Data transmitted between your browser and this site’s server is encrypted in transit. Contact form submissions are transmitted securely. Guitar audio and fret input data never travel over the network and therefore require no network-level security protection.
Children’s Privacy
GuitarChordIdentifier.com does not knowingly collect personal data from children under the age of 13. The site does not require account registration and does not request personal information from any user as part of using its tools. Guitar audio is never transmitted or stored for any user. If you believe a child under 13 has submitted personal data through the contact form, contact Daniel Murphy at contact@guitarchordidentifier.com and the data will be deleted promptly.
